Authorities have confirmed the recovery of the body of a fifth person who went missing following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge over a month ago. The victim, identified as Miguel Angel Luna Gonzalez, 49, of Glen Burnie, Maryland, was found on Wednesday.
The tragic incident occurred on March 26 when a container ship lost power and collided with one of the bridge's supporting columns, causing six members of a roadwork crew to fall to their deaths. The victims, all Latino immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, were working on the bridge at the time.
While five bodies have now been recovered, one worker, Jose Mynor Lopez, remains missing. Salvage teams located one of the missing construction vehicles on Wednesday, leading to the discovery of the body inside a red truck. The recovery operation involved multiple agencies, including the Maryland State Police, Maryland Transportation Authority Police, and the FBI.
Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland Butler expressed the commitment to ongoing recovery efforts and extended condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized the importance of supporting the families during this challenging time.
The Dali container ship, which has been stationary at the site of the collapse, is set to be refloated and removed to allow maritime traffic to resume through Baltimore's port. Officials anticipate the ship's removal by May 10, as stated in a Port of Baltimore news release.
