Train drivers will be striking for the fifth time early in the new year, threatening travel chaos as commuters return to work after the Christmas break.
Members of the drivers' union Aslef at 15 train companies will walk out for one day after voting for more industrial action in the long-running dispute over pay. Meanwhile members of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at Network Rail and 14 train operators will strike for four days, meaning a week of disruption is expected.
Aslef members will walk out on Thursday January 5, while RMT members are planning to strike on Tuesday 3, Wednesday 4, Friday 6 and Saturday 7. There are still more strikes to come in December, with RMT previously announcing strikes on Saturday 24 until Tuesday 27.
