Fifita, Foran partnership keeps Titans in finals hunt

Dynamic duo Kieran Foran and David Fifita is the match made in heaven that will have Gold Coast supporters believing in a surge to the NRL finals.

Injuries to veteran No.6 Foran have reduced the amount of games they have played together this year but Queensland wrecking ball Fifita scored a try and set one up either side of halftime after slick passes from Foran in the upset 18-12 win over Brisbane.

When Fifita was recalled to the Maroons side this year he credited the 2011 premiership winner.

Now the star second-rower is sure they are both making each other better footballers.

"Kieran has been massive for us this year. To play with him on my edge I am so grateful," Fifita said.

"He is an older head who can tell me what to do and what not to do. I have to listen because it is Kieran Foran.

"I reckon it (goes) both ways. I tell him what to do and he tells me what to do. I have heaps of respect for him. He is a great player."

Foran said he was also relishing having Fifita outside him.

"I am pretty lucky to have a guy like that running outside me," he said.

"He is a top-class back-rower and one of the most damaging ball runners I have played alongside. It makes my job a lot easier."

The Titans are on 20 points and just outside the top eight on for and against.

Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui was given a deserved rest against the Broncos after playing big minutes for Queensland as well.

The development in Fifita can be gauged by his determination to take on that extra responsibility and show it with deeds.

"Tino has been tremendous for us all year and played his heart out in Origin, so to not have our leader not out there myself and Brimo (AJ Brimson) and Moe (Fotuaika) backing up from (Origin) camp we all had to step up," Fifita said.

Fifita has been outstanding in the Maroons' 2-0 State of Origin series lead and said he was blessed to wear a Queensland jersey. He feels the same way about the Titans.

"I really wanted to back it up against the Broncos and get the bragging rights," he said.

"I am really proud of the boys efforts (after) the week that we had with all of us sticking together and moving on. To get the win means a lot."

Fifita signed a contract extension this year while former coach Justin Holbrook was at the helm. Holbrook was sacked on Thursday and Fifita was stunned.

"To hear Justin was not there anymore was really emotional for myself and all of the boys," he said.

"He is a wonderful person and wonderful coach. We got along well together but...(interim coach) Jimmy Lenihan and our staff are doing a wonderful job with us."
