FIFA confirm World Cup rule change that could affect six Tottenham stars next season

November and December are going to be very quiet months in the Premier League compared to usual with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar taking place at the end of this year. Following the release of the new 2022/23 fixture schedule last week, Spurs will face Liverpool and Leeds in November before returning to action at the end of the following month against Brentford and Aston Villa as all major leagues are going on pause with the tournament taking place.

With the World Cup not so far away now, it was confirmed on Thursday that FIFA have approved 26-man squads, as was the case at Euro 2020, for the World Cup rather than the usual 23. All 26 players will be included in a matchday squad, a change from what happened at the Euros when matchday squads remained at 23 players and three subsequently missed out on selection.

Tottenham will see a number of their squad depart for the tournament in November and the news that teams can select 26 players once again could give hope to some of those on the periphery of their national side. So which Tottenham players could this benefit ahead of the World Cup? football.london takes a look.

Eric Dier

It remains a mystery as to why Dier has not received an England call-up since March 2021 following his brilliant form for Tottenham at centre-back. Looking in contention to be included at the start of the month for the team's Nations League games, the 28-year-old again missed out as Gareth Southgate opted for Harry Maguire, John Stones, Conor Coady, Marc Guehi, Ben White and Fikayo Tomori as his centre-back options.

Given England's woes in their past four games, including their 4-0 hammering at home to Hungary, we could see a few changes here and there in the team ahead of the World Cup. A strong start to the 2022/23 campaign and Dier will give Southgate a real decision to make ahead of the tournament in Qatar, with the extra three places potentially working in his favour.

Ryan Sessegnon

Sessegnon has been putting in the work during his pre-season break as he looks to hit the ground running next term. Nudging ahead of Sergio Reguilon in the pecking order and recapturing his best form, the ex-Fulham man now has Ivan Perisic to contend with for Spurs' left wing-back berth.

If he can make the position his own in the opening months of the season then he could be a wildcard pick for the World Cup as England aren't blessed with as many options at left-back compared to the right flank. There's always a surprise selection in England's World Cup squad and Southgate has shown in the past that he does like to promote from the U21s.

Oliver Skipp

If injury didn't curtail Skipp's season then the Tottenham man may have earned a place in the England squad going on his terrific form in the middle of the park for Spurs. Impressing for the U21s in the past, you wouldn't bet against the 21-year-old making a name for himself in the senior squad at some point after making some real progress over the past couple of years.

Conte rates his player incredibly highly but the youngster has a real battle on his hands for a starting spot next season as he is in a fight with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur and new signing Yves Bissouma for a midfield slot. If he can come out on top and start regularly then he may possibly have an outside chance of World Cup selection.

Bryan Gil

Spain will be one of the favourites for the World Cup after doing well at Euro 2020 and then making the Nations League final last October. Gil played his part in the latter competition, getting 15 minutes in their semi-final win over Italy.

The winger hasn't played for the senior side since and has had to settle for a place with the U21s instead. However, Luis Enrique may want to include someone in his 26-man squad who has a bit of an X-factor to his game, with Gil, who impressed on loan at Valencia last term, certainly having all the qualities to be a big hit on the national stage.

Sergio Reguilon

Sticking with Spain, an extra three places up for grabs could help Reguilon out in terms of Enrique's squad for Qatar. Key to coming into his thinking, though, will be finding his form again having last played for his country in September 2021.

Reguilon has plenty to do if he wants to earn back his place as he has Jordi Alba and Marcos Alonso ahead of him in the pecking order.

Emerson Royal

Emerson will be hoping to return to the Brazil squad very soon after missing out on selection in March and June. Tending to be involved prior to his recent omission, the Brazilian requires a strong start to the season if he is to win over national team manager Tite.

The main question is whether the player will still be at Tottenham come August, however, as Spurs want to bring in a new right wing-back before the transfer deadline.
