FIFA 23 new Chemistry System explained after being updated by EA again ahead of release

After confirming an overhaul to chemistry in FIFA 23 Ultimate Team, EA Sports has now tweaked their chemistry system again before the upcoming release.

EA Sports announced in their FIFA 23 Ultimate Team deep-dive in August that there would be a brand-new chemistry system being introduced into FIFA 23 Ultimate Team, giving players a new way to build their squads and get more creative than ever before. The update saw the removal of overall squad chemistry, with the focus now on players' individual chemistry.

FUT 23 will see players given 'Chemistry Points', with each player's chemistry rated on a scale of 0-3, three being the best. But, in the latest FIFA 23 pitch notes, EA has now tweaked how chemistry is calculated based on feedback received from the FIFA Community, making it easier for players to build their squads.

Some players have had access to FIFA 23 Ulitmate Team through the Closed Beta, with EA using this as a way to collect feedback from players before their worldwide release. Let's take a look at the new chemistry system and what updates EA have made.

FIFA 23 Ultimate Team - How to build player chemistry

FIFA 23 will see a complete overhaul to the chemistry system in FUT, allowing players to be more creative than ever before. As well as adding new chemistry features, EA has also removed some.

EA has removed overall squad chemistry in FUT 23, with the focus only on building the maximum chemistry for individual players. Position links have been removed, with players now able to link regardless of their position on the pitch - so no more worrying about green, amber and red links.

Players on FUT will be given chemistry based on 'Chemistry Points', with players able to gain up to three points and be judged on a scale from 0-3. The three primary factors that determine the chemistry score for each player are Preferred Position, Chemistry Threshold and Manager Bonus.

  • Preferred Position: Players can only get their chemistry score above zero if they are in their preferred position. Players will also only contribute to other players' chemistry scores if they are in their preferred position.
  • Chemistry Threshold: If a player who is in their preferred position has the same club, country/region or league as another player, both players' chemistry scores will increase by one. So, if you had three players in the same team from the same club, country/region or league, they will all increase to three chemistry points. Chemistry Threshold is the primary way to build chemistry scores.
  • Manager Bonus: Lastly, Manager Bonus means that players who share the same country/region or league as the manager will see their chemistry score increase by one, if not at 3/3 already.

How does chemistry work in FUT 23 with EA's new update?

Previously, EA announced that for a player to gain one chemistry point, that player needed to have three players from the same nation in the starting XI, and for a player to get two chemistry points, they must have five players from the same club in the starting XI. But, in their new pitch notes, EA has lowered the threshold for the nation and club chemistry.

Now, players will need to have two players rather than three from the same nation in the starting XI to gain a chemistry point, and they will now need four players rather than five from the same club in the starting XI to gain two chemistry points. For example, if you had Kylian Mbappe and Presnel Kimpembe in your starting XI, both players would be on 2/3 chemistry points due to them both being from the same club and the same nation.

FUT 23 Position modifiers

All base cards have one primary position and up to three alternative positions in FUT 23, for example, Paris Saint-Germain's Kylian Mbappe's primary position is at ST, but he can also play at CF and LW.

With a position modifier applied, the Frenchman can now be played in his alternative positions without impacting his chemistry score. With a position modifier applied, the Frenchman can now be played in his alternative positions without impacting his chemistry score.

Will having low chemistry make my FUT 23 squad worse?

Unlike previous FIFA's the new Chemistry System means if players are out of position and have 0/3 chemistry points, their stats won't be negatively impacted and will stay the same as their base stats. Players will receive boosts to their card with better chemistry, but players on zero chemistry won't be negatively impacted.

Does the new FUT 23 Chemistry system impact ICONs and FUT Heroes?

As long as they're in their preferred positions, ICONs and FUT Heroes will always be on full chemistry in FUT 23. ICONs will boost players with the same country/region by two chemistry points, whilst Heroes will boost players with the same league by two chemistry points and the same country/region by one.

What does this mean for FUT 23 Chemistry styles?

Chemistry styles will also be slightly different in FUT 23. Players at one chemistry receive a small boost, players at two chemistry receive a medium boost, and players at three chemistry receive a full boost.

The impact of certain chemistry styles has also been slightly altered, with some boosts now smaller than they were in FIFA 22. For example, the Shadow chemistry style will only give a +8 boost to Acceleration and Sprint Speed rather than +10 to players with 3/3 chemistry points, and the Basic chemistry style will now only give +4 boosts rather than +5.
