Feyenoord boss admits he expected more from Arsenal loanee Reiss Nelson amid "struggles"

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot has admitted he's concerned about Reiss Nelson's form since he joined them on loan last August.

The Arsenal forward, 22, has scored just one goal and produced one assist in 18 games for the Dutch giants this season.

Much was expected of Nelson following his impressive loan spell at Hoffenheim in 2018-19, scoring seven goals for the German outfit.

He's also done well in England, making 22 appearances in all competitions during the 2019-20 campaign to help Arsenal win the FA Cup.

Although Nelson has failed to deliver the goods so far this season, Slot is convinced he will find his form in the coming months.

"The talent is there, but what Reiss still struggles with is creating big chances for himself or his teammates," said Slot, as quote by Sport Witness.

"You see a lot of skill, speed and agility, but the final push is still missing. Then it’s just not a finish or just not an assist.

"The most difficult thing in football is to get the best out of your play. And if you play for Feyenoord, where you often end up in a promising position as a winger, you expect a higher yield.

"I don’t think he is much of a goal scorer anyway. I don’t see him doing that much in training either, but at Hoffenheim, in the Bundesliga, he scored seven goals. That’s excellent.

"I did notice that against NEC, he looked for his direct opponent when he had the ball, which was lacking in the game with Vitesse.

"I think Reiss is much more of a preparer than a finisher, and I’m convinced he’ll show he can do better."

Feyenoord, who last won the Eredivisie five years ago, are hoping to regain their title this season.

The 1970 European champions are currently third in the table - six points behind champions Ajax - and have also progressed to the knock out stages of the Europa Conference League.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has previously described Nelson as a "special player" who "can eliminate players one on one", while skipper Alexandre Lacazette has praised his work ethic.

"He [Nelson] is a big talent," said Lacazette in July 2020. "I trust in him, he is working a lot in every training session."

Speaking last November, Nelson revealed what he was learning in the Netherlands. "In the months that I am here, I am really impressed with Feyenoord," said the talent.

"I knew the name Feyenoord when I came to De Kuip, of course, and I also knew that the game against AZ was a bit loaded.

"I thought it was fantastic to come on in a packed stadium with a great atmosphere."

On comparisons with the English game, Nelson added: "When I compare English football with Dutch football, I see that in England, it’s more about running and switching quickly.

"The pace of the matches is higher. Here it is more about tactics, I notice."
