Emerson Fittipaldi has "no doubt" that Ferrari will return to winning ways "very soon" despite their underwhelming start to the new Formula 1 season.
The Scuderia hoped to mount another title challenge this year after a strong start to 2022, only for their championship push to crumble. There was plenty of confidence in their new car in Maranello and an assumption that Ferrari would be fighting for race wins from the get-go.
That has not been the case. Red Bull have been a long way ahead of anyone else in terms of car performance. And, to make matters worse for Ferrari, Aston Martin have joined the usual 'big three' this year and have been scoring better than the Italians and Mercedes.
Ferrari sit fourth in the constructors' championship after the first four races of the season, 25 points behind Aston Martin and already 118 adrift of runaway leaders Red Bull. Charles Leclerc won two of the first three races in 2022, but failed to finish at both of those tracks this time around.
Asked about Ferrari's problems by Mirror Sport, F1 legend Fittipaldi remains optimistic about the Italian team despite its struggles. The reason why he is confident about their impending return to winning ways stems from his experience of having worked with the new team principal.
"I have a different vision for Ferrari now and the reason for that is that I have worked with Frederic Vasseur when I had Team Brazil," said Fittipaldi. "He was my technical manager and we won the first race with Nelson Piquet Jr. at Brands Hatch.
"I know Frederic Vasseur's capacity as a team manager. With all the potential behind him at Team Ferrari, with him on top and all the good people that Ferrari has working for him, they will put their act together.
"I have no doubt that Ferrari is going to get better results, be more consistent and have a good strategic plan for the races. I think the whole picture will change very soon. This is my personal opinion. Ferrari will be back, competitive as ever, very soon."
Ferrari secured their best result of the season so far in Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Leclerc held off Fernando Alonso at the end of the race to secure his first podium of the year, while Carlos Sainz came home fifth despite the challenge from Lewis Hamilton behind him.
