Former Ferrari designer and technical director Mauro Forghieri has died at the age of 87.
Forghieri helped Ferrari win four F1 drivers' championships and seven constructors' championship during a 27-year stint with the team. He joined Ferrari straight from university as a trainee, before being appointed technical director by founder Enzo Ferrari.
He held the position until 1984 and famously designed Ferrari's 312T car, which Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter both won world championships in.
"Legends last forever," Ferrari wrote in a tribute on social media. "Remembering Mauro Forghieri. 1935 - 2022. It's been an honour making history together. Ferrari and the world of motorsport will never forget you."
F1 president Stefano Domenicali also paid tribute to Forghieri, calling him a "huge part of F1 and Ferrari". Domenicali said: "I am very saddened to hear the news that our friend Mauro Forghieri has passed away.
"He was a huge part of F1 and Ferrari and leaves behind an incredible legacy for all of us. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this sad time."
Lauda, who passed away in 2019, described him as a "tremendous engineer" in one of his autobiographies.
"Forghieri was obviously a tremendous engineer and Luca [di Montezemolo, team manager] was very good at telling the Old Man [Ferrari] about what was happening," Lauda wrote.
