Ferguson delivers surprise Rangers Scottish Cup final selection plea to Van Bronckhorst

Ferguson delivers surprise Rangers Scottish Cup final selection plea to Van Bronckhorst

BARRY FERGUSON has called for Steven Davis and Allan McGregor to start for Rangers in Saturday's Scottish Cup final.

The former Ibrox skipper reckons the experienced duo should be given the chance to "go out" on a Cup win after the heartbreak of the Europa League final loss.

Speculation has grown over whether Davis and McGregor will call time on their Rangers careers after the showpiece final against Hearts.

And Ferguson insists the pair should start at Hampden, even if Davis has been a rotation player and Jon McLaughlin preferred in goal in the Cup this season.

Writing in his Daily Record column, Ferguson said: "What I would also say is my two old pals Steven Davis and Allan McGregor don't deserve to go out on a low like this one."

Ibrox favourite Ferguson was impressed with Davis in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt after he came on.

And he reckons the midfielder has done enough to make himself an easy first-choice for Giovanni van Bronckhorst on Saturday.

Ferguson wrote: "When Davo came on I felt he turned the game in Rangers' favour. For the first time all night I felt able to sit back down in my seat and have a sip of beer.

"He had that midfield under control and, if I were Gio, I'd already have his name on my teamsheet for the Scottish Cup Final.

"As for Greegsy, he absolutely has to start even though Jon McLaughlin has been selected all the way through.

"Big Jon's time will come. But if this really is to be the end for my old mate then he deserves nothing less than to go out with one last trophy in his hands."
