Ferguson calls for Rangers duo to return to side after Union Saint-Gilloise loss

Ferguson calls for Rangers duo to return to side after Union Saint-Gilloise loss

BARRY FERGUSON reckons Rangers pair Allan McGregor and Steven Davis should return to the line-up after the Euro loss to Union Saint-Gilloise.

The Ibrox hero reckons the duo can still play a major role for the club despite entering the latter stages of their respective careers.

Jon McLaughlin appears to have earned the No1 spot under Van Bronckhorst this season starting in both the league opener and 2-0 loss in Europe.

But Ferguson reckons McGregor still warrants the starting spot in goal over the ex-Hearts and Sunderland stopper.

Speaking on Go Radio's Football Show, Ferguson commented: “I’m not going to sit here and slate Jon McLaughlin. But if you’re putting big Jon and Allan together then it’s McGregor all day long for me.

"They struggled. I’m not going to paper over the cracks. There was enough experience. When you play these games, normally when you don’t play well you get three or four off the boil but what surprised me last night was there were 11.

“They were poor. It was one of they games where the beauty of football is there’s a game around the corner. They got away with one and they’ll be flying back last night thinking ‘it’s only 2-0’ and they’re lucky to get away with 2-0."

Rangers will play Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League third qualifying round second-leg next week looking to overcome the two-goal deficit to qualify for the play-off.

And Ferguson reckons Davis could also return to a starting role as he shot down any suggestion the midfielder is too old or just a back-up player.

Ferguson added: “Steven Davis? Yeah. I still think he’s got it in him. I don’t care what age he is, he’s got it in him and he’s an ultimate professional. For me, he could easily still play in the Rangers XI."
