Fenham man swigged rum during four-hour stand-off with police from top of neighbour's shed

A man asked to be tasered during a four-hour stand-off with police from the top of his neighbour's shed.

Glyn Fowler was swigging from a bottle of rum and took what appeared to be Valium tablets during the incident in Fenham, Newcastle, one evening earlier this month. A court was told that the 21-year-old stayed in situ for four hours until he eventually agreed to come down and was arrested.

However, Fowler's behaviour escalated further and he made threats to bite officers if they continued to restrain him. Prosecutors said the lout even told one constable that he hoped his daughter would get raped.

Now, Fowler, of Lonnen Avenue, in Fenham, has been fined £200 after he pleaded guilty to a public order offence at Newcastle Magistrates' Court. He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.

Claire Armstrong, prosecuting, said police were called to Lonnen Avenue at around 7pm on November 14 and found Fowler standing on top of his neighbour's shed. Miss Armstrong added: "During his time on the shed, the defendant took a handful of tablets he said were Valium or Pregabalin.

"He was also swigging from a bottle of rum. At one point, he dropped some tablets that were in his possession into his neighbour's garden. The officers retrieved them as there were small children in the house. During the four hours he was on the shed, the defendant said he wanted to be tasered and asked what he needed to do to get tasered. He then changed his mind and said he didn't want to be tasered."

The court heard that Fowler's neighbours said they felt distressed at his actions and told officers it was the second time he'd scaled their fence in the last few days. After four hours, Fowler did eventually come down and he was handcuffed and taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Miss Armstrong said: "The defendant made threats to bite police officers if they continued to restrain him. He called the officers monsters and told one officer he hoped his daughter would get raped."

Michael Crowe, defending, said Fowler had mental health problems and sometimes misused alcohol. Mr Crowe continued: "He has been on top of his neighbour's shed roof. The police have come along and he's not co-operative with them. He's not disorderly on top of the roof, he made a nuisance of himself. His behaviour changes when he's arrested."
