Feeney ready for Supercars challenge

Broc Feeney is excited before his first race as legend Jamie Whincup's replacement on Saturday. (AAP)

Teenager Broc Feeney expects to be well-rested and ready to go when he begins life as the replacement for Supercars legend Jamie Whincup on Saturday.

The 19-year-old made his first appearance on track for the Red Bull Ampol Racing team in Friday's practice sessions for the season-opening Sydney SuperNight event.

Feeney finished 10th and 14th in the two 40-minute practice runs at a damp Sydney Motorsport Park as Red Bull's new era began.

With retired seven-time champion Whincup now donning a headset rather than a helmet in the Red Bull garage as the team's managing director, Feeney will make his first full-time start in Saturday's 77-lap opener under lights.

"I'm happy with how everything went, and I think I'm going to sleep pretty well," Feeney said.

"I made some adjustments to the car to get me a little more comfortable, and I'm feeling a lot more at home because of it, which is good when you've got 300-kilometre races this weekend.

"Although we made a couple of changes, it's pretty difficult to understand what's going on, but overall, I'm pretty happy with how things are going.

"I'm keen as for (Saturday)."

Feeney's teammate, defending series champion Shane Van Gisbergen, had a mixed day in the tricky conditions on Friday.

The New Zealander spun off the slippery track in the opening practice session before making some big changes to his Commodore in the second session and coming home sixth-fastest on the day.

"Although you don't learn much in the ways of setting up your car in these conditions, you really learn as a driver, and that's going to really help us later in the weekend," Van Gisbergen said.

"Every other driver has the same problem, so you just have to try and manage it better then everyone else.

"The humidity also hits you inside the car - it's hot as hell which is weird."

Saturday's action begins with qualifying and a top 10 shootout before the race starts under lights at 7.10pm.
