Feeling FOMO this new year? 6 ways to feel less lonely and improve your mental health

While most focus on having a healthy physical health, it is equally important to focus on one’s emotional wellbeing. Feeling low, sad or even lonely for a brief period is normal, but a being in the feeling for long and if ignored or measures are not taken towards betterment of one’s mood then it might lead to impacting one’s mental health. Below are some ways one can adopt to feel less lonely:

Express gratitude

Each day acknowledge the help of some person who has helped make your day easier by helping you or by just being there. Conversely if you need to apologize to them for some reason, that is fine too. Use this as a small conversation starter to check in on them. This not only makes their day but makes you realize just how big and available your support system is.

Develop a hobby or skill

Having an extracurricular routine which requires you to connect with nature can be of immense help. So, go for a jog or a walk with your family and pets. Improving your skill set or upgrading your current one is a fun way of challenging yourself and meeting new people.

Limit the virtual world

According to Dr. Kedar Tilwe, Consultant Psychiatrist, Fortis Hospital Mulund, "Social media has taken the place of real connections. Your virtual presence is necessary in today's world for reasons ranging from online office, social media to shopping. Remember to limit the 'online' presence and make time for real world interaction and conversation like meeting friends & well-wishers over a brunch or snacks.”

Cut off some screen time

Ideally you need to decide on the fixed quota of screen time including TV, Mobiles & Tablet. Ensure that your family is able to talk with each other for at least 2 hours per day. Make meal times no screen zones and set a cut down time for any virtual devices and social media.

Stop the illicit drugs

Alcohol, cannabis, opioids and even tobacco are drugs whose dependence will cause you to be completely cut off from the world, and only chase the high of the drug. Stopping it might be the best way to defeat loneliness.

Set aside time for personal connect

Set aside time for yourself, your spouse, your kids and your family. Just a 15 min chat each day will help drive away the loneliness blues. Connection with self is as important as the one with our near ones. Yoga, relaxation exercises will allow you to focus, feel confident and in tune with your surroundings, so practice them daily! If you feel overwhelmed, reach out to your confidants, mental health professionals nearby or even consider calling a tele-helpline, if necessary, but do reach out!
