The federal government has launched a new information program in the lead up to the referendum about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.
The program is designed to provide Australians with factual information about the referendum proposal and will point people to Voice.gov.au where they can learn more before voting day, which is set to be between October and December this year.
The website and program are designed to provide neutral information on the proposal of the Voice.
A similar neutral "civics" campaign was run during the last referendum in 1999.
The government previously ruled out providing any public funds to either the Yes or No campaigns before the referendum, on whether to create a permanent independent advisory body called an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice, takes place.
It will cover a variety of mainstream and targeted channels, including television and radio commercials and will be translated into a number of languages.
Minister for Indigenous Australians Linda Burney said it was a key step in "preparing the country for this national conversation before voting day".
"All Australians need to be well-informed with access to a trusted source of information as they consider the proposal to change the Constitution to recognise the First Peoples of Australia through a referendum."
As well as the website and program, the government has allocated $475,000 to the Museum of Australian Democracy, and $1 million to the Constitution Education Fund Australia, to create more general content and information about the Constitution and the referendum process.
The government says the organisations will work together to deliver a "grassroots civic program" which will include easy-to-understand guides on what people can expect when they vote later this year.
"This is one part of the broader Referendum civics education program with investments made through the Museum of Australian Democracy and the Constitution Education Fund Australia to give Australians everything they need to make an informed decision," Mr Burney said.
Community toolkits and other resources will be made available on the Voice.gov.au website.
