Fears second major Scottish river could burst banks as Storm Babet continues

THE Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) is warning a second major river could breach its banks today.

Aberdeenshire Council has said the latest modelling indicates a considerable risk of flooding on the River Don at Inverurie, Kemnay and Kintore.

Sepa’s flood duty manager Pascal Lardet said: “These are very difficult days for communities in Scotland who are experiencing flooding.

“There is more rain to come, and Sepa staff are working around the clock to provide vital information to partners and the public.”

It comes after hundreds of homes were flooded after the River South Esk breached its banks.

Hundreds of residents in Brechin were forced to evacuate their homes.

As well as Marykirk, Sepa has also issued a number of severe flood warning across Dundee and Angus.

These are in place in:

  • Kinnaird/Bridge of Dun
  • Finavon and Tannadice
  • Brechin

Meanwhile, widespread travel disruption will also continue with ScotRail confirming that a number of lines would remain shut due to “ongoing extreme weather”.

These include the lines between:

  • Aberdeen and Elgin
  • Aberdeen and Dundee
  • Perth and Dundee
  • Far North & Kyle of Lochalsh lines remain closed due to planned engineering works.

However, the operator has said that it will be able to run services from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Inverness, Glasgow to Perth and Inverness to Elgin.

Elsewhere, six matches across the Scottish Professional Football League have also been cancelled including Aberdeen vs Dundee and St Johnstone vs Motherwell.
