Some of the UK's most popular restaurants could run out of food this festive season as workers who deliver to them voted to go on strike. It has been reported that almost 400 workers at logistics company Best Food will walk out after rejecting a pay offer.
According to industry website Big Hospitality, the GMB has said that a majority of the 76% of workers who voted were in favour of striking. Dates are set to be announced soon.
Best Food delivers fresh food to many of the UK's biggest restaurant chains, including KFC, Burger King, Wagamama, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express and Zizzi. The GMB said a pay offer of 6% was rejected last month.
Best Food is owned by Tesco and Booker and the GMB said they were making "serious money", according to the Big Hospitality report. GMB national officer Nadine Houghton told the website that shareholders were pocketing "large dividends while the people who do the graft are struggling to make ends meet".
She added: "All these workers want are a pay deal that protects them from this crushing cost of living crisis. Now, some of the best known restaurants on the UK's high streets will face shortages over Christmas."
A Best Food Logistics spokesperson told Big Hospitality: "Best Food Logistics provides colleagues with a competitive and comprehensive reward package. We will be working closely with our customers to ensure they can continue to get the products they need and remain actively engaged with GMB to reach a positive outcome for our colleagues and customers."
