Arsenal have been playing catch up to their top-four rivals for some time. Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea have had the run on the Gunners for several seasons now.
The lack of European football available to Arsenal, especially at the elite level in the form of the Champions League has cost them dearly. Despite Liverpool also have a ‘self-sustaining model’ like Arsenal, they can boast a Premier League and Champions League title in the last half-decade.
Therefore when Arsenal look towards Serge Gnabry as a potential transfer target, they have been sent plenty of warnings regarding possible hijackings. It looks as though Real Madrid will not compete with the Gunners should they choose to pursue their former youth talent.

Gnabry has become quite the star for Bayern Munich since his return to Germany. However, Bayern look to be the favourites to land Sadio Mane who has seemingly chosen to leave Liverpool according to the latest reports.
Therefore, with that in mind, a winger down it would make sense for the Reds to take the player looking to possible leave Bavaria. Arsenal would be able to offer little more than nostalgia and unfinished business over Liverpool.
Minutes would certainly come into it considering the roster of wide men under Jurgen Klopp. But that hardly stopped Diogo Jota and more recently Luis Diaz from making the switch.
Chelsea meanwhile have been infamous for pulling out big signings. It looked as though Liverpool would land then RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner for a long period of time before the Blues stole a march on them and activated his release clause.
Similar too was their purchase of another young German star Kai Havertz. The former Bayer Leverkusen man was linked with a host of elite clubs but the ruthless west London side offered a deal that Leverkusen could not refuse.
Hakim Ziyech is supposedly up for sale this summer. Like Liverpool, a winger down they too might venture into the market should they not be confident in youth product Callum Hudson-Odoi to take the spot next season.
Arsenal meanwhile will likely lose Nicolas Pepe. football.london understands his switch of agency correlates to a desire to seek a move away in search of more regular game time.
This would open up a spot in the Arsenal squad and Gnabry would without a doubt walk straight into it. His and Bukayo Saka’s versatility to play on either flank would not be a concern should worry of regular game time be brought up.
If they want Gnabry, Arsenal needs to take a hard and fast approach. Whilst the unrest continues at Bayern, sound out the player representatives similar to their pursuit of Gabriel Jesus, work out whether Gnabry would be open to a move and take it from there to the club.
It is this blunt operating technique in the window that has seen the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea steal a march on them over the last decade. Now is the time to show some mettle in the transfer market.
