FC Zurich fined €10,000 by UEFA after Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon struck by object thrown from away end

FC Zurich fined €10,000 by UEFA after Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon struck by object thrown from away end

FC Zurich have been fined €10,000 by UEFA after Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon was struck by an object thrown by an away fan in the recent Europa League clash.

The Scotland international was visibly in pain after being hit on the back of the head as he was about to take a free kick close to the vociferous Zurich supporters at Tynecastle.

Hearts lost the game 1-0 after going down to ten men through Jorge Grant’s sending off at the start of the second half and bowed out of the competition in a 3-1 aggregate defeat.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary body also hit FC Zurich with a €11,250 penalty for ‘lighting fireworks’ and were warned over a ‘lack of discipline of supporters’.

Speaking at the time about the incident, Gordon said: “There's absolutely no excuse for it, the players are out there putting on a great show.

"It was a really good game, you don't need to be facing that as well.

“So, yeah, disappointing. I hope we can all do something to stop it but it's very difficult."

Despite the defeat to Zurich, Hearts had the consolation of dropping into the Europa Conference League group stages.

Robbie Neilson’s side lost their opening Group A game 4-0 to Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir last week and take on RFS of Latvia in Riga this Thursday. The Gorgie side will also face Italian side Fiorentina in the group.
