Stjepan Tomas has resigned as manager of FC Sheriff just two days before they were set to face Manchester United in the Europa League. United are back in action on Thursday night when they welcome the Moldovan side to Old Trafford for the penultimate match in their group.
Tomas only took charge of Sheriff this summer but has chosen to vacate the position following their defeat to Petrocub at the weekend, their first league defeat of the season.
Speaking after the 1-0 loss, the Croatian manager took the blame for the defeat on himself: “It seems that the players were thinking about the match in Manchester, there was no concentration. This is my mistake."

It is not currently clear who will take charge of the away side for the match at Old Trafford, with Sheriff due to travel to Manchester on Wednesday.
Sheriff currently sit third in Europa League Group E and know they will be knocked out of the competition unless they win by more than two goals on Thursday night.
If two teams are level on points, qualification for the knockout stage is determined on head-to-head record, meaning the Moldovan side will need to at least match United's 2-0 win over them last month.
Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo were on the score sheet for Erik ten Hag's side when they secured a comfortable win at the Zimbru Stadium.
