FBI Operation Not Forgotten Makes Strides In Indigenous Communities

The Federal Bureau of Investigation seal is seen at FBI headquarters in Washington

A surge of FBI agents, analysts, and victim specialists has been deployed to investigate violent acts impacting Indigenous communities and unsolved cases on tribal lands. This initiative, named 'Operation Not Forgotten,' is a collaboration between the FBI and the US Bureau of Indian Affairs, focusing on crimes such as physical and sexual abuse of children, missing persons cases, violent assaults, domestic violence, and murder.

During the period from June to September, the operation led to the arrest of 40 suspects, the indictment of 11 alleged violent offenders, and the rescue of nine children from abusive situations. The FBI emphasized the importance of building partnerships with federal and tribal law enforcement agencies to expedite the criminal justice process and provide support and justice for victims and their families.

Forensic teams have been actively involved in examining crime scenes to aid in solving investigations on tribal lands. In one case, agents meticulously analyzed evidence and the victim's final text messages to establish a timeline of events surrounding a missing person found deceased in a field.

Indigenous Americans face disproportionately high rates of violence, with studies indicating that over 84% of American Indian and Alaska Native women and 82% of men have experienced violence in their lifetimes. Additionally, Indigenous children are more likely to endure abuse and trauma compared to their non-Native peers.

One significant challenge in addressing these issues is the lack of public awareness. Limited media coverage and insufficient resources dedicated to investigating cases of missing and murdered Native Americans have hindered efforts to bring justice to victims. Advocates have highlighted the need for increased support and representation within law enforcement agencies to address these critical issues.

Efforts are underway to raise public awareness and enhance investigative outcomes for missing Indigenous individuals. Initiatives such as the creation of a master database of missing Native Americans by the FBI and the establishment of public alert systems in states like Washington have proven effective in locating missing persons and raising community awareness.

By leveraging intelligence resources, social media, and traditional news outlets, law enforcement agencies and nonprofit organizations are working collaboratively to address the challenges faced by Indigenous communities and ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals.
