FBI Counterintelligence Units Facing Deep Cuts as Resources Shift to Immigration

FBI counterintelligence squads across the country are operating with significant staffing shortages as agents and analysts are redirected toward immigration enforcement and violent crime, according to five people familiar with the matter who spoke to NPR.

Counterintelligence squads in many of the FBI's 56 field offices have only 50% to 60% of their positions filled, while multiple offices have cut the number of squads dedicated to tracking foreign spies in half.
