The father of a 24-year-old Canadian woman who died in Shetland has paid tribute to his daughter.

Claire Leveque, 24, was found dead at a property in the Sandness area of Shetland on Sunday 11 February after police were called to reports of a disturbance.

A 39-year-old man, Aren Pearson, named locally as her boyfriend, has been charged with her murder. He made no plea and was remanded in custody at Lerwick sheriff court last Thursday.

Clint Leveque told Canada’s CBC News that his daughter, who had moved from Canada to Shetland late last year, was “so friendly to everybody she met”.

He added that there were “no words to describe the whole situation” and that he was focusing on his daughter’s qualities: “Being happy and doing things that she loved doing and being with people.”

Debris that appears to be from a car is on the roadside near the property.

Pearson is expected back in court before the end of this week.

Local people said the death had shocked the remote, close-knit community.
