Fate of Bolton's New York New York 'superclub' finally revealed

A former nightclub in Bolton town centre is set for a radical transformation. Plans have been submitted with Bolton council to convert the New York New York club - later known as Loco Bolton.

The former 'superclub' once had space for 1,000 people and was a key fixture in Bolton's nightlife scene, but it has been empty for years.

In 2013 the building reopened as Loco Bolton after a £500,000 investment resulted in a 1,000-capacity club. The space was previously, New York New York, which opened in 2006 and was inspired by the 1970s super-club Studio 54 with its dance floor a replica of the original.

The club had three bars and a VIP area. A design and access statement on behalf of the applicants, said: “The application site is located within the heart of Bolton town centre, within a row of units which comprise multiple ground floor retail and commercial uses.

“The site was formerly used as a nightclub at ground floor level, with staff accommodation and offices at first floor level. The premises is currently vacant and has not been in use for a significant period of time.

“Directly adjacent to the application unit, within the same building, is Argos. The delivery area to the rear of the application site is shared by Argos and the other commercial units along Bridge Street.

“On street parking is available directly outside the application site, with approximately eight dedicated spaces, as well as a large multi storey car park located behind the site on Crown Street. Planning permission was granted for the change of use of the ground floor to a restaurant in July 2018.”

However, that permission was never implemented and so has expired.

The application added: “The application site is currently vacant and has been so for a lengthy period of time. Bringing the unit back into active use, ensuring an active frontage, would significantly improve the vitality, character and appearance of the immediate and wider locality.”

Planners at Bolton council will decide on permission of the proposals at a later date.
