Local authorities in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, have revealed that the tragic collapse of a building housing a bar and restaurant club, resulting in the death of four individuals, was due to the structure lacking the necessary authorization. The incident, which occurred last Thursday, claimed the lives of two German women aged 20 and 30, a 33-year-old Spanish woman, and a 44-year-old Senegalese man.
According to Mayor Jaime Martínez, the collapse of a first-floor terrace was likely caused by excess weight and substandard construction work on the building. The Spanish woman who lost her life in the accident was reported to be an employee at the club.
Fire department spokesman Eder García emphasized that there should not have been any activity on the rooftop of the building. The collapse not only affected the street-level floor below but also caused damage to a disco area in the basement.
Reports indicate that at the time of the tragedy, there were 21 individuals on the terrace. The combined weight of 12 Dutch patrons seated at tables, along with the serving staff, is believed to have overloaded the roof, leading to its catastrophic failure.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and structural integrity of buildings in the area, particularly in popular tourist destinations like Palma de Mallorca. The restaurant, known as Medusa Beach Club, was situated near the beach and attracted a significant number of tourists.
