Fashion lover shares way to make 56 outfits from eight pieces of clothing

Ever look in your wardrobe full of clothes and see rails of full coathangers yet still feel as though you’ve got nothing to wear? Same. All the time. But one TikTok user has said there’s a reason for why we often feel this way, and has the solution to fix it.

Fashion enthusiast @miks_tiks recently went viral on TikTok after sharing how to make more than 50 outfits from just eight pieces of clothing, two pairs of shoes and some basic maths.

It comes as the capsule wardrobe trend has racked up more than 443 million views, with Mikatla Stephenson’s video amassing more than 5.2 million views.

The idea behind a capsule wardrobe is having a select few interchangeable pieces of clothing that can be mixed and matched to maximise the number of outfits with the fewest amount of pieces.

The secret to mastering this, says Mikayla, is basics. She told TikTok: “If you always feel like you don’t have anything to wear it’s probably because you don’t have enough basics. Because the key to a functional wardrobe and to always having something to wear is to have good basics that are cohesive with each other.”

Mikayla shared the eight pieces of clothing and two pairs of shoes that she interchanges, which included a pair of tan cargo pants, blue denim shorts, a white skirt, a black corset top, tan basic tank, a white ‘baby tee’ and a white button up shirt, alongside a multicoloured tube dress, white trainers and white slider sandals.

She explained: “That’s three different bottoms, four different tops and a dress. With each of the bottoms I can obviously do all four tops - that’s already 12 outfits right there. But one of my tops is a button up and I can wear each of the other shirts with the button up as a cover up. That's seven different top options per bottom.”

Already at 21 outfits, Mikayla put together further outfits using the dress and added: !I also have a dress which can be worn on its own or with the button up two ways. But I can also use the dress as a skirt and wear it with some of the tops.

“I now have seven different options for each of the bottoms and the dress so 28 outfits total.”

But of course, you can’t forget about the shoes, and as each of the outfits could be worn with either pair it doubled the number of potential outfits, bringing the number of styles to 56. And had Mikayla opted for a black heeled boot, too, it would have pushed the total up to 84 outfits.

Some commenters argued that the shoes didn’t ‘make it a different outfit’, but Mikayla said it makes ‘entirely different levels of formality or occasion’. She then posted a second video trying on all 56 ways to wear the 10 items together, which commenters said looks ‘amazingggg’.
