Fascinating 1800s mugshots reveal Greater Manchester's criminals - from cheese thieves to Scuttlers

From stocking stealers to a bowler hat-wearing thief who pinched 56lbs of cheese, 20lbs of ham - and four dead rabbits. There's even a man who was jailed for life for a failed bomb plot to blow up a town hall and the modern day equivalent of a Metrolink fare dodger.

This collection of crooks were all taken off the streets and brought to justice by the long arm of the law in Greater Manchester in the 1800s - and what a bunch they are. The fascinating rogues' gallery of convicts can be revealed in Greater Manchester Police's museum's achieve records.

There's some bizarre crimes and flicking through the records, the industrial poverty of the era can surely be attributed to many motives. From Salford gangsters to prolific thieves, the collection makes for incredible reading.
