Far-left lawmaker to chair French parliament's powerful finance committee

Far-left France Unbowed (LFI) MP Eric Coquerel was on Thursday elected to the key post of president of the National Assembly's influential Finance Committee.

Coquerel, who was picked in a closed ballot vote, has been described as a "tireless defender" of working-class neighbourhoods and a staunch proponent of LFI leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon's fight against islamophobia.
