Fantastic poppy artwork unveiled at Castle Douglas branch of Legion Scotland

A fantastic artwork has been unveiled in Castle Douglas ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

A waterfall of more than 300 poppies has been draped on the town’s branch of Legion Scotland in tribute to the town’s past military sacrifices.

Members of the Knit and Natter Group – under the helm of Denise Currie and friends – spent hours putting together the beautiful creation.

The group meets in the Legion Scotland Clubhouse at 1pm every Thursday for creative knitting projects and welcomes anyone who is a dab hand with a pair of needles, wants to learn or likes a wee natter.

The Stewartry will come to a standstill this weekend for Remembrance Sunday.

Services will take place across the district as people pay their respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Dalbeattie branch of Legion Scotland will take its colours to Haugh of Urr at 9.30am before heading to the service of remembrance at Dalbeattie Parish Church at 11am.

Wreath laying will take place at the town’s war memorial from noon and it is hoped some members of the reformed town band will attend. Afterwards, everyone is welcome at the Kings Arms for refreshments.

The colours will be taken to Kirkgunzeon for 2pm and the team will also be heading to Buittle.

The service in Castle Douglas will take place at the War Memorial at 10.45am. It will be led by Rev Alison Burnside before wreaths are laid by Stewartry’s Lord Lieutenant Lord Sinclair and Major Ian Munro, chairman of the Castle Douglas branch of Legion Scotland.

The parade will disperse afterwards and anyone wishing to attend the service should make their way to the parish church. There will be refreshments in the Legion club rooms for those attending.

There will be a service at Kirkcudbright War Memorial at 10.45am. All of the town’s churches will then have their own services with many of the officials likely to attend one at Kirkcudbright Parish Chuch at 11.10am.

Gatehouse Parish Church will host a service at 10am followed by an act of remembrance at the war memorial at 11am.

Twynholm’s church service starts at 11.30am before the act of remembrance at the memorial at 12.30pm.
