US journalist Craig Melvin‘s recent interview with Anya Taylor-Joy has gone gangbusters on social media for all the wrong reasons, with some fans accusing the reporter of being “unprepared” for the gig.
Ahead of the release of the highly anticipated animated flick The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, a sequel to the beloved The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Taylor-Joy appeared on the Today show to talk all things Princess Peach.
However, the interview went in a bizarre direction. During the celebrity chat, Melvin noted that a plethora of Taylor-Joy’s previous roles were all… trapped.
“In The Queen’s Gambit you’re trapped in chess, you’re trapped in the kingdom here in Mario, [and] you’re trapped sort of in Survival,” Melvin began before Taylor-Joy rebutted with, “So, I have a history of being trapped?”.
“I was going to ask you, is that a theme that you seek out or is that just a coincidence?” Melvin asked.
In response, Taylor-Joy admitted that the common theme of being trapped felt “like fate”.
“I always felt very fortunate that the characters that I’m supposed to embody do have a way of finding me,” the award-winning actress replied.
“I think now, with some hindsight, I do see a through-line between my own personal journey and what I’ve been allowed to depict on screen, but they always seem very different to me.”
Following the question of being trapped, Melvin went on to touch on bubbling rumours that Taylor-Joy is slated to play Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic, but somehow related it to Princess Peach.
“You’re rumoured to be playing Joni Mitchell … one of the, arguably, most singularly important women in music over the last generation or so. Princess Peach, one of the most iconic women in gaming history. What’s the connection there?” Melvin asked.
“What’s the connection between Joni and Princess Peach?” Taylor-Joy asked again, to which Melvin replied, “Yeah”.
Attempting to draw a comparison between the two icons, Taylor-Joy waxed lyrical about how both Mitchell and Princess Peach are untouchable legends.
“How they’re both singular; you can’t touch them,” she said.
“They’re in a league of their own.”
While Taylor-Joy managed to answer the questions with ease, fans watching the interview highlighted how bizarre the questions were, with some speculating that Melvin wasn’t prepared for the chat.
One Redditor also speculated that he might’ve gone “off-script” when it came to the interview questions.
As a fellow journo (and human being), we all have our stuff-ups! But kudos to Anya Taylor-Joy for taking on the tricky questions with absolute class.
