The Pelicans are two wins away from taking home the title of inaugural NBA in-season tournament champions and a nice chunk of change.
Players on each of the four remaining teams will make at least $100,000, while that jumps to $200,000 for the two squads that make the final and $500,000 to whoever wins it all.
While $500,000 is a nice payday for anyone, it’s significant for the players who aren’t playing on max or near-max contracts. One of those names is New Orleans guard Jose Alvarado, who revealed his incredible family-first plan for the money while speaking with Andscape’s Marc J. Spears.
It’s all going to his three daughters.
“I will not touch the money,” Alvarado told Andscape. “ … It’s not for me. It’s not in my hands. I’m living my life. They got to live their lives and I don’t want them to struggle at all.”
“… Let that grow and let them have it. I ain’t going to see it. I promise. I ain’t going to touch it. It’s a great opportunity to do that. A lot of people aren’t that fortunate, but I am. I just want this game to keep me blessed and I don’t want my kids to worry about nothing.”
It’s an incredible gesture, but what makes it even more impressive is the fact that Alvarado has made a total of $3 million in his NBA career to this point. He’ll make $1.8 million this season.
So it’s hard to do anything other than applaud the Pelicans guard, right?
Well, some people did just that, but the reaction of many others was a bit head-scratching, to say the least. It was essentially a mixture of fans trolling the Pelicans, saying the team isn’t going to win, and some criticizing Alvarado for saying publicly that he’ll be giving the money to his kids.
It was strange.
But y’all not winning 💀 lucky kings had injuries

I’m hoping any players with kids will take care of their kids without having to say it publicly

Fortunately, for those of us who love the heartwarming stuff, there was also plenty of praise coming Alvarado’s way from fans who appreciated hearing about the guard’s intentions.
Amazing father man

Split the money, invest it with a reputable company, those girls will have much more by the time they're 18.
The type of father everyone wished they had 😩

Alvarado's focus on ensuring his children's future showcases the true essence of family values. His words resonate as a reminder that success isn't just about individual achievement but creating a legacy of security and love for those we hold dear

“I got my daughter in the stands. I got my dad. My family really couldn’t make it cuz it’s just the struggle of life, but I’m just so happy I get the chance to tell them I’m a champion.” ❤️
