There’s no denying that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is looking pretty good, but it would (obviously) be so much better with Nintendo 64 visuals — which now exists, thanks to one passionate fan.
Youtube animator King Bob brought the dream to life by giving The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s second trailer an N64 makeover — by taking models from Super Mario 64 and syncing them up perfectly with scenes from the film. Seriously, it’s practically shot-for-shot all the way through! It works surprisingly well, considering these assets are more than 20 years old by now.

You’ve got to love that shot of Browser plucking Luigi’s 2D mustache — Jack Black’s take on our favorite spikey turtle bad boy is simply irresistible, no matter the polygon count. Chris Pratt’s spin on the titular plumber is still kind of iffy. That half-hearted ‘let’s a-go’ isn’t any better, even with old-school aesthetics.
At any rate, The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrives in theaters on April 7, 2023. Other big names attached to the project include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad.
