Famous 'Penny Lane' barbers uses Beatles connection for good cause

The owner of a Liverpool tourist landmark has used its popularity to support a good cause.

Adele Allan owns the Tony Slavin 'Penny Lane' Barbers, and has worked at the salon for 40 years. Every year Beatles fans flock from all over the world to visit the shop made famous by the Fab Four.

When tourists come through the door, eager to take souvenir photographs, Adele asks for a donation to a local cause in exchange. Regular customer Frank Donovan decided to collaborate with Adele after learning about her support for local charities.

Mr Donovan, founding trustee of The Bloom Appeal - a charity supporting blood cancer patients on Merseyside, told the ECHO: "Beatles fans come from all over the country to her shop, all over the world even - we know because there's dollars and euros in the donation buckets.

"I've been getting my hair cut there for years and when I asked Adele if she would put a donation box in for the Bloom Appeal she said yes straight away. The money raised will help so much, it helps support people who can't work because of blood cancer, and helps fund research."

As Adele approaches her 60th birthday, she will retire from the barbers after a 40-year career at the salon. Mr Donovan, 81, added: "Adele has worked at the shop for 40 years, but she has never met one of the Beatles sadly. When Paul McCartney came to Liverpool for Carpool Karaoke they visited the barber shop, but Adele wasn't working that day."

Speaking to the ECHO last month, Adele, from Roby, said she has worked "on a Saturday since she was 17" and hopes by "winding down" she can spend more time with her grandchildren.

The donations collected for The Bloom Appeal by Adele's 'Penny Lane' Barber Shop totalled £1,698.05.
