'Family say our kids will get bullied for their names - but we love how unique they are'

Naming your baby isn't an easy task, and it can be tricky to pluck out the perfect name that will follow your child for life. The hard decision can sometimes cause in a lot of unwanted opinions as the choice may not sit well with everyone.

While no one has the right to criticise your child's name, a unique choice can sometimes attract concern. Taking her worries to popular forum Reddit, a mum sought advice as her sister-in-law has slammed her choice of moniker.

Captioning the post, the mum wrote: "Am I the a**hole for telling my sister-in-law I didn't ask for her opinion on my children's names?"

She explained: "My husband and I have two children together. Our two-year-old son is Keane and our six-week-old daughter is Aura. Our kids' names are a little different compared with names in my husband's family but they align a lot closer with my siblings and me.

"My sister-in-law decided she needed to get her input in after our daughter was born when we announced her name.

"She said she bit her tongue when our son was born but could not do it anymore and that we were setting the kids up for a world of teasing because their names are not actual names and they're just words or last names we threw into the first position.

"She told me how I always have to spell my name for people, Zariyah, and that I am going to make my kids hate me."

She continued: "I told her I had not asked for her opinion on their names and she should have kept biting her tongue because I did not want to hear her thoughts.

"She called me a b***h and told me I am taking her concern for the kids and tossing it in her face.

"My husband told her that she should be bitching at him because he wanted something less boring than the names in their family and he always loved mine and my sibling's names.

Seeking advice, the woman questioned: "She claimed I was still rude to her and should apologise. Am I the a**hole?"

Flocking to the comments, Reddit users rushed to share their opinions - while many claimed that the sister is in the wrong, others have noted that the names are rather unique.

One person said: "Not the a**hole and cheers to your husband for backing you up. She gave her opinion where it wasn't asked for or necessary. She doesn't deserve an apology."

A second agreed: "Not the a**hole. Siblings-in-law should have ZERO expectation about giving unsolicited baby name advice."

"Not the a**hole," a third added. "She has absolutely no say so in what you name your own children. I'd tell her I named my pet snake after her though."

Meanwhile, another person wrote: "As a teacher, kids are getting more used to some names but Aura is going to get comments. It's like celebrities calling their kids apple and blanket."
