Family's shock as cheeky thief caught on camera stealing hanging basket

A cheeky thief has been caught on camera stealing a hanging basket during the early hours of the morning.

A Kirkby mum went to water the flowers in her hanging basket in the front garden one night before she noticed that "one was missing". Being confused about where it could be, she soon checked her CCTV footage and was shocked at what she saw.

In the footage a passer-by walks straight up to the garden, in the Northwood area, before simply taking one of the hanging baskets from the door and walking away. The daughter told the ECHO that the hanging baskets were her parents' "pride".

She said: "My dad loves his gardening so he wasn't happy. The flowers get watered every evening but my dad was away that night and my mum went out but she noticed there was only one there. She checked the CCTV and saw it had been stolen at around 1.30am that morning.

"The person who took it must have been to someone else's house first because they were already carrying one hanging basket. My mum has told the local area to keep an eye out for anyone selling baskets.

"It's so strange. It's quite funny because you can see the person eyeing up the baskets wondering what one to take. I'd urge everyone to remain vigilant though and if anyone sees anything then report it."

The CCTV captured the brazen thief already carrying a hanging basket - believed to be from elsewhere - before allegedly looking around the hanging baskets near the front door. The person then reaches up to take an item before simply walking off down the street, with two hanging baskets in their hand.

Taking to social media, the daughter - who said police have not been called - wrote: "My dad takes pride in his flowers and we all joke he has the best baskets in Kirkby."
