Family-run cake shop and cafe permanently shuts in Durham City due to 'huge downturn' in footfall

A family-run cake shop and cafe in County Durham has closed permanently due to a "huge downfall" in footfall. It's All About The Cake announced the closure of its venue in The Riverwalk after years of trading.

The Durham city centre shop, which opened in 2018, was pictured last week completely empty of stock and fixtures following the announcement. There is also another shop in Peterlee and a bakery in Wingate but the owners said its other venues were unaffected by the closure.

In a statement, the owners thanked its customers for all their support over the years as well as the staff who were "dedicated right up until the end". They also said they had not taken the decision "lightly" and said it was down to a drop in footfall post-Covid.

The statement read: "It is with a very heavy heart we announce the closure of our Durham store with immediate effect. We have not taken this decision lightly but due to a huge downturn in footfall post covid our position within the city centre has become untenable.

"We would like to thank all those who have supported us over the last 4 years since opening our doors in 2018; the customers who we have loved getting to know and most importantly the staff who been so dedicated right up until the end.

"Our other shop in Peterlee and bakery in Wingate are completely unaffected by this decision and we hope you all still support us in the other aspects of our business. All we can say is for now, goodbye Durham. We thank you. Lots of love, team It’s All About The Cake."

Gutted customers took to social media to express their sadness about the closure with one saying: "So sorry to hear this, absolutely loved coming in when we lived there. You were always so welcoming and those cakes... sooo good. Such happy memories."

Another said: "A sad day, but don’t be disheartened. You are fabulous! Wishing you and the team well," while a third commented: "I am gutted!! We've visited the shop every week without fail since you opened so I'm so sad to hear you're closing."
