The son of a Pennsylvania grandmother who is believed to have fallen into a sinkhole while looking for her lost cat is praying for a miracle, as rescue teams conduct a desperate search.
Elizabeth Pollard, 64, disappeared Monday evening on December 2 after leaving her car, where her 5-year-old granddaughter was found unharmed. Pollard was reportedly looking for her cat, Pepper, in Unity Township, ABC27 reported.
"I'm upset that she hasn't been found yet, and I'm really just worried about whether she's still down there, where she is down there, or she went somewhere and found somewhere safer," Axel Hayes, Pollard's son, said. "Right now, I just hope she's alive and well, that she's going to make it, that my niece still has a grandmother, that I still have a mother that I can talk to."
Authorities suspect the sinkhole formed suddenly, likely due to an abandoned coal mine last operated in 1952. Pollard's family reported her missing early Tuesday morning when she failed to return.
Rescue teams have been working around the clock to locate Pollard, facing unstable conditions in the sinkhole, which descends about 30 feet and appears to connect to a compromised mine.
Crews have inserted cameras into the void, discovering what could be a shoe, but no signs of life so far.
Excavators are cautiously removing clay-like soil as officials hang on to hope that she found an air pocket underground.
Rescue efforts are said to continue until Pollard is found.
