Family pays tribute to Jaxson Montague and Ashanti Lee Smith who died after car crashes into tree at Lochiel

Family and friends are mourning the loss of a young couple who died in a road crash in South Australia's Mid North.

Jaxson Montague, 19, and Ashanti Lee Smith, 17, died at the scene at Lochiel on Tuesday night.

The car — which Mr Montague was driving on Augusta Highway — left the road and crashed into a tree.

Its front passenger — a 46-year-old Port Pirie man — was airlifted to Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries.

More than $3,000 have been raised so far to help the family pay for the funerals.

Several family members, including Ms Smith's grandmother, have paid tribute online to the couple, who were both from Port Pirie.

"This is a nightmare. I wish [it] was just that and we would wake up and all is OK," Elizabeth Smart wrote online.

"I wish you would just walk through the door or call but it will never be like that again, Ashanti. What I would give just to hug you one more time.

"[Jaxson] was such a wonderful person, [who] treated you like a queen. We loved him just as much you both will be missed."

The Augusta Highway was closed for several hours while major crash officers examined the scene. It has since reopened.

These lives are the 68th and 69th lost on South Australia's roads, compared to 99 by the same time last year.
