Family pay tribute to 'big friendly giant' who died in Stanhope crash

The family of a man who tragically died in a collision near Stanhope has paid tribute.

On Monday, August 8 at around 7.30am, police officers were called to a two-vehicle collision on the A689 between Eastgate and Stanhope. The driver of the van, 58-year-old Gary Robert Turley, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene a short time after.

The road was closed for several hours to allow investigators to work at the scene.

In a tribute, Gary’s family said: “Gary was a big character with an even bigger heart. Gary was well known for his happy, easy going and carefree attitude, he truly was our ‘big friendly giant’.

“We have had an overwhelming response from friends, family and the local community. This has reminded us just how well-known and well-loved Gary was and that he will leave a huge void in the lives of many that will miss him dearly.

“We will cherish all the happy memories that he has left us with. We would now ask to be left in peace to grieve the loss of our son, brother and uncle.”

Collision investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have any dashcam footage of the collision. Anyone who can help is asked to call the Collision Unit on 01325 742702, quoting incident number 61 of August 8.
