A devoted family have paid a heartfelt tribute to a Tyneside ice cream legend who has passed away.
Michael Minchella, co-owner of Minchella & Co South Shields, died peacefully at home, with his wife Anne by his side, after a brave battle with chronic kidney disease. A statement on the business's Facebook page said the grandfather made the tough decision to withdraw from treatment for the disease in order to spend more quality time with his friends and family.
The statement continued: "Michael embraced the consequences of this decision head-on. In doing so, he showed courage and bravery, whilst also ensuring the welfare of his family, as he always did throughout his life.
"Michael was a proud family man, recognising all the achievements of his wider family both past and present. Michael wholeheartedly loved his wife Anne, who has been an incredible support to him, particularly in his later life. He was also a proud father to son Joe and his partner Jade and loving Nonno to his grandson Federico. He would remind them of how much he loved them every day.
"We shall remember Michael as always being on hand to support and help those who needed it. He truly was one of the wisest and funniest, always having the right thing to say at the right time. Michael had a big heart, the ripples of his love, kindness and generosity will be felt for generations to come.
"We believe that ice cream is created to give people moments of happiness. This ethos transferred to all parts of Michael's life, touching the hearts of many people in local community and beyond."
Mr Minchella was one of the stalwarts of the Ice Cream Alliance, having been president between 1990 and 1991, served regularly on the board, and continued to support of the ICA. He also won many accolades in the National Ice Cream Competition, including National Ice Cream Champion in 2018.
His family say his favourite ice cream flavour, out of the hundreds he produced, was "freshly made vanilla, eaten straight from a litre tub, with a large spatula".
The family added: "We would like to thank everyone who has supported Michael through his later life, and we thank all those who have continued to support us after his passing."
Mr Minchella's son, Joe, also wrote: "Dad, you have left me with so much love and happy memories. I couldn’t have been prouder of you. Thank you for everything you have done for me and my friends and family. You will live in my heart forever."
Mr Minchella's family have asked those who would like to share memories or photos of him online to use the hashtag #michaelminchella99. Alternatively, they can leave comments on the business Facebook page here.
