Family of schoolgirl hit by taxi give update on her condition

The family of a schoolgirl hit by a hackney cab have given a devastating update on her condition.

Merseyside Police officers were called to Bigdale Drive in Northwood, Kirkby, just after 6pm on Tuesday, July 11, following reports of a crash. Once officers arrived at the scene they found an eight-year-old girl had been hit by a hackney cab.

A cordon was put in place by officers and an air ambulance from the North West Air Ambulance Charity was called. Merseyside Police told The ECHO the girl was taken to hospital with serious injuries, which are not believed to be life threatening.

The driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquires. No arrests have been made.

Commenting on The Liverpool ECHO's Facebook page underneath the initial story on the incident a family member gave an update on the young girl's condition.

They said: "She's badly bruised, she has two fractures to her skull one front and one back, has a bleed on the brain but not life threatening. Need to stop any swelling otherwise it will be."

People in the area told the ECHO they were worried when they heard about the incident and some were seen coming to the cordon to ask if the young girl was okay. One mum who lives off Bigdale Drive said she saw the aftermath of the incident and described it as "heartbreaking".

She said: "There is speeding up and down that road. My kids are older now but it was [an issue] when they were growing up. There are young kids on the road, so it is heartbreaking."

Another woman from the area said she fears for children who are often playing ball games on the banks of grass or are out with friends in the street.

She said: "The kids play on the verges with a ball kicking it too and from and can be running over the roads. There's always been an issue with cars speeding up and down here.

"They put up 20mph signs but it doesn't do anything. You look at them [the cars] and think children don't stand a chance. It's awful what's happened and I hope she's okay."
