Family of missing newlywed join lochside search for body 27 years after disappearance

The family of a missing newlywed yesterday joined a lochside search for his body more than 27 years after he disappeared.

Kevin McGuire left his home in Stronachlachar near Aberfoyle, Perthshire, on December 31, 1994, and drove off in his green Saab after an argument with his wife of just five months.

No trace of the 27-year-old or his car has been found and it remains one of Scotland’s most baffling and longest-running missing persons cases.

Yesterday, the McGuire family travelled to Stronachlachar to watch a water search team begin looking for him.

The hunt by a volunteer team from Chorley, Lancashire, called Beneath the Surface, used the latest in underwater sonar technology as Kevin’s sister Sharon Garvin, 48, younger brother Paul, 47, and mum Annette, 77, stood nearby.

Their weekend search for Kevin and his car includes the nearby waters of Loch Katrine, Loch Chon, Loch Arklet and Loch Lomond.

Mum Annette said: “The family are very grateful they’ve taken the time to help us find Kevin after all these years. I have never given up hope of solving the mystery of what happened to my son.

“All we are looking for is to find Kevin and finally get some closure.”

Mother-of-two Sharon, who travelled from her home in County Kildare in Ireland with husband Paul, 47, added: “The new search has all given us fresh hope that we can finally find Kevin.”

Paul, who works in construction, called on the police to reopen their investigation into Kevin’s disappearance.

He added: “It should be treated as a cold case. All we want is to bring Kevin home and give him the send-off he deserves.”

Kevin, from Glasgow’s Ballieston, had no money worries or mental health issues and had married Lisa Haney, then 24, earlier that year.

Beneath The Surface offered its services for free to help the McGuire family.

Set up last year, it has already found the bodies of two missing people in Cumbria.

In 2002, Lisa took out an action to have Kevin declared legally dead.
