Family of 4yo burned in shed fire in northern Tasmania says he is 'doing well' in hospital

The grandmother of a four-year-old child who was severely burnt in a shed fire in Tasmania's north has described him as a "beautiful and kind boy", as he recovers in a Hobart hospital.

"He's the kindest, gentlest little boy," Jessica Gunton said.

"You couldn't meet a happier, happy-go-lucky, sharing boy. He's the world, he's just amazing."

On Wednesday afternoon, emergency crews were called to a property on Verdun Street in Mowbray to find a shed well alight.

A three-year-old boy was found dead inside.

Roman Clarkson was also in the shed at the time and received severe burns to his arms and legs. The two boys were second cousins.

"[Roman is] doing well. They've just taken him off his ventilator and they're very positive," Ms Gunton said.

"We're all heartbroken and we're just trying to come to terms with it … it's been hard on everybody but we're a very big, strong family and we all get together and we're there for each other."

Roman's mother Cassandra is at the Royal Hobart Hospital with him, and his father Jerome is at home looking after their daughter, who was asleep on the couch at the time the blaze broke out.

Ms Gunton described the incident as every family's worst nightmare.

"I was manic, I was erratic [first hearing about it]. I didn't know … I don't know how to describe it," Ms Gunton said.

"Everything's sort of a blur, I just remember yelling, 'What happened? Where's my grandchildren?'"

A fundraising page has been set up to help the family with medical and transport costs.

"It's going to be a long-term situation for them," Ms Gunton said

"It won't just be over in a few weeks and my daughter obviously can't work while she's in the hospital with him, so I hope it helps them."

'We'll just take each day as it comes'

Roman's aunt, Shyla Gunton, saw him the day before the fire.

"We were sitting on the couch and he was showing me his games on his tablet. He's just so funny, he makes me laugh all the time," she said.

"I think he's amazing, his laugh is contagious."

She said she had been kept up to date on his progress in hospital and he was "doing really well".

"We're doing the best we can. We'll just take each day as it comes

"It is really emotional. We're all still in shock."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

"I just can't wait for them to find out what happened, and I'm just praying for a good recovery for my grandson," Ms Gunton said.

"It's nearly Christmas time and I just really hope we have him home for Christmas."

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
