Family 'mortified' as Leeds man loses tooth in 'unprovoked attack' in McDonald's

A man was knocked unconscious in a McDonald’s restaurant in Leeds as he ordered food in an “unprovoked attack”.

Kieran, 26, has been left with facial injuries and has lost his tooth, with a chance of losing another, following the assault on Sunday, May 29 at around 2am.

The shop manager had been out for a family meal for his sister Kelly’s birthday then went out for one drink with a friend before the attack.

The friends then went to McDonald’s, in Merrion Street, in the city centre. A man approached him from behind as he ordered from the screen and knocked him out.

Speaking to LeedsLive, Kelly said he hadn’t been in an argument with the man and he didn’t even know who he was.

“We’re mortified,” Kelly said. “We were out together for my birthday meal as family, he had one drink with his friend then that's what happened.

“He was attacked for no reason, he doesn’t know who it was, he’d never seen the person before.

“He went to McDonalds with friends to order food and walked over to the self-service kiosk. Someone hit him from the side and knocked him unconscious. They knocked one of his teeth out.

“The person randomly attacked him, there was no argument, pre-warning, no nothing.

“His friend was at the other side of the kiosk by the time he got to him all he saw was security giving him paper towels. There was no ambulance called, the security let the man leave.”

Kelly claims that the security allowed the man to leave before police arrived at the scene and she also claims no ambulance was called for him as she slammed the lack of duty of care towards her younger brother.

Kieran, who is taking time off work since the attack, was taken to hospital where he had to have a CT scan to make sure there was no bleeding on the brain and check whether his jaw was displaced or broken.

He lost one tooth but another one next to it is wobbly and may also fall out. He is now facing a £3,000 bill for each tooth to get fixed.

Kelly continued: “Anyone who knows him knows he is a kind, gentle man who wouldn’t harm a fly, which is why as a family we are so deeply shocked and saddened this has happened to him.

“He’s the kindest, most hardworking, very outgoing and confident person, he’s nothing like that now. He doesn’t want to see us, he wants to be on his own.”

West Yorkshire Police are now looking to speak to anyone who was in the McDonald’s between 2-2.30am on May 29.

A spokesperson said: “Enquiries into this assault remain ongoing. Anyone in McDonalds in the St Johns Centre between 2-2.30am on May 29 and has information is asked to contact Leeds District Police on 101 or www.westyorkshire.police.uk/101livechat referencing crime number 13220290174.

“Information can also be given anonymously to the independent Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.”

A spokesperson from McDonald’s said: “The safety and security of our people and customers is our absolute priority. Our people reacted quickly during this incident by alerting police, removing customers from the restaurant and administering first aid. We will continue to work with the police on any investigation of this incident.”
