Family guide to new movie releases

'VIOLENT NIGHT'

Rated R for strong bloody violence, language throughout and some sexual references.

What it’s about: Santa Claus turns to violence in order to defend a little girl and her family who are targeted by a gang of criminals on Christmas Eve.

The kid attractor factor: Despite this being a movie about Santa, the bloody, foul-mouthed execution isn't quite for kids.

Good lessons/bad lessons: Believing in Santa, in whatever way that means to you, can land you on the Nice List.

Violence: Extreme bloody violence throughout, including shooting, stabbing, hammering and various other forms of creative torture and murder.

Language: Strong language and swearing throughout.

Sex: References to sex.

Drugs: Binge drinking.

Parents’ advisory: Way too violent and mature for kids. This is for mature teens and adults only.

'SPOILER ALERT'

Rated PG-13 for sexual content, drug use and thematic elements.

What it’s about: A TV journalist and his husband face a battle with cancer together.

The kid attractor factor: Not much — this is more of an adult drama.

Good lessons/bad lessons: One of the most important things in life is helping someone face death.

Violence: None

Language: Some strong language and swearing.

Sex: A few intimate sex scenes but nothing graphic.

Drugs: Marijuana use.

Parents’ advisory: This is a sad story about love, illness and death. The themes are probably too sobering for kids, but it's fine for teens.
