Family 'distraught' after viewing CCTV of Colleen Calgaret being hit by WA Police car

Family members of a 20-year-old woman who is fighting for her life after being hit by a police car say they are "shocked and distraught" after viewing CCTV footage of the incident.

Colleen Calgaret is in a critical condition in Royal Perth Hospital after she was hit by a marked police car in Northbridge, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Colleen's sister Jasmine Calgaret said the family had asked police to show them the footage of the incident, which happened on the corner of Wellington and William streets about 1.15am.

The young mother is in intensive care after suffering serious head injuries.

"We have seen the footage this morning and we are very shocked and distraught," Jasmine Calgaret said.

"But we are very pleased that we have seen the footage, thank you for the minister and everybody being by our side at this time, and the support that they have shown us.

"We have had a lot more communication with the police."

She said the family still had some questions, but she believed the investigation into the incident would get to the bottom of what occurred.

"We are still in shock and we still need to be by our sister's side," Jasmine said.

"It was definitely not easy to see that footage, considering that is our baby sister, and we just don't want this to occur to anybody else."

Family calls for respect

Mariah Calgaret called for people to show respect when expressing their opinions about what happened to her sister Colleen.

"No-one's saying you can't have your opinion, because it's free will, you're allowed to," she said.

"But just be mindful of [us] because we have social media, we're reading what you're saying, it's quite devastating, how we are feeling.

"You wouldn't wish this on anybody.

"You don't understand the whole thing until you're in that situation, so we're asking the community at this point in time to be thoughtful of the family."

She called for understanding for the officers involved in the incident "because, yes, we've got the worst side of the stick here, but it's not easy for anybody".

"I'm sure anybody that would be in the situation of just hitting somebody is enough to send someone into a bit of a spin.

"We don't want noise, we don't want this at this point in time to be pulled down to race."

Sister does not 'blame' police

Mariah Calgaret said WA Police had committed to answering the family's questions.

"It's not going to be something that's going to be solved overnight," she said.

"We've got to accept the long journey, and pray that it's going to get better because I feel for us as a family, I feel for the broader community, the people that witnessed it and also the two officers in the incident.

"I don't want to play the blame game, I don't want that for them because I can't imagine what they must be feeling, and how they're beating themselves up as well.

"And we don't want people also putting words into our mouths. We just want the best outcome for all parties in this."

Senator Dorinda Cox said it was paramount for people to show respect for Ms Calgaret's family.

Footage of incident 'shocking': Commissioner

Police Commissioner Col Blanch said the vehicle's flashing lights were on when the crash happened.

Commissioner Blanch said he had seen CCTV footage of the incident, which had no audio, so he could not say for sure if the siren was on.

"It's a shocking video," he told Nine Radio.

"The investigation by Major Crash is underway.

"It is a tragedy, of what's happened to that young girl, I know the police are also significantly affected by that outcome."

He said the investigation will be "helped greatly" by CCTV of the incident.
