A West Lothian family have been left devastated after their beloved dog was seriously injured in a hit-and run accident outside their home.
Bear, a 14-month old Poochon was left was catastrophic injuries including pelvic fractures and a ruptured urethra following the horror incident in Armadale on Tuesday.
His owners Samantha Mushet, her partner Greig Brown and Greg’s son Finlay are heartbroken by what has happened and hit out at the driver who allegedly didn’t get any help for Bear.
She said witnesses have told her the car stopped, put their hazard lights, got out the car to look then drove off.
Samantha said she has raised concerns before about drivers outside her home at Station Road in Armadale to the police on three previous occasions, saying it was “only a matter of time” before someone was hurt.
Samantha said: “Bear managed to escape when my step son was coming in the front door with his dad Greig. Bear then saw another pup across the road and wanted to play.
“He has been in the vets since it happened Tuesday afternoon and yesterday moved to a specialist vet to get an operation that will hopefully save his life, we are still 50/50 whether he will make it home he will be in the specialist vets for at least five to seven days, depending on how he is.
“We called the vet late last night, his catheter is draining which is amazing, he’s on methadone for the pain and wanting to eat but keeps vomiting. We just want him home now to give him the biggest cuddle.”
Samantha continued: “We have reported Station Road to the police three times regarding the way people drive. It was only a matter of time before someone got hurt and unfortunately it’s our wee Bear, he was only one in November. We have also reported it to the council.”
Samantha said she is horrified that someone could hit a pet like Bear then drive off, adding: “We will keep fighting for Bear and we will do everything we can to find out done this to him. He's not just a dog, he’s our world.”
She continued: “Bear is the most gentle, loving, great natured dog you will ever meet, everyone loves him. The vets commented on how much they loved him too.
“Bear means the world to us and the last few days have been heartbreaking for us as a family he brought us all closer and the house feels empty without him. We have another dog Belle she is only nine months and she is distraught without him here.”
Samantha’s friend Sheena Douglas has set up a Crowdfunding page to help with Bear’s vet costs.
The family we still have to pay 20 per cent of the claim and Samantha has been unable to work since a car accident last year and only have one wage coming into the household.
She added: “We would never have dreamed of this ever happening to us, like every family we live from day to day and just get by.”
Police Scotland have been approached for a comment.
