A chaotic confrontation outside a Taipei hospital has sparked a high-stakes legal battle over love, money, and family loyalty. The dispute centres on a 102-year-old Taiwanese businessman, identified by local media as Mr Wang, who quietly married his 68-year-old caregiver in early January. Weeks later, his adult children discovered not only the marriage but also that he had reportedly transferred significant assets to his new wife and her family.
The dramatic encounter unfolded on February 3 outside a hospital in Taipei’s Zhongshan District. Video footage published by TaiwanPlus News shows the elderly tycoon seated in a wheelchair, being pushed by his wife, Ms. Lai, as they exited the building following a medical appointment.
Waiting near the entrance were several of Mr. Wang’s relatives, including three sons, their spouses, and grandchildren. As the couple approached, the family moved in quickly. In the footage, relatives appear to push Ms. Lai aside and take hold of the wheelchair, attempting to remove Mr. Wang from the scene.
The confrontation escalated into a shouting match. Ms. Lai can be heard calling for police assistance. Authorities later confirmed they responded to a disturbance report. According to local accounts, officers spoke with both sides before Mr. Wang ultimately left with his family.

At the heart of the conflict is a dispute over Mr. Wang’s vast fortune. Reports indicate that before the hospital incident, the centenarian transferred seven parcels of land and an insurance policy worth approximately £1.9 million to Ms. Lai and her children. The total value of those transfers is estimated at about £4.7 million. His overall wealth is believed to range between £16 million and £18.7 million, largely tied to real estate holdings in Taipei.
Family members have alleged that Ms. Lai isolated Mr. Wang from relatives and exploited what they describe as a decline in his mental condition to secure control over his assets. They argue that the marriage and financial transfers should be scrutinized in court.
Ms. Lai strongly denies those accusations. She has filed complaints alleging coercion and public insult stemming from the hospital altercation and has sought a protection order against members of the family.
Taiwanese household registration officials stated that when the marriage was registered on January 5, Mr. Wang met the legal requirements. Authorities said he was able to answer questions clearly at the time. Under Taiwanese law, individuals who possess legal capacity may marry regardless of age.
Legal experts say the case will likely hinge on Mr. Wang’s mental competence at the time of the marriage and asset transfers. If a court determines he lacked the capacity to make those decisions, the transactions could be challenged. If not, the marriage and financial gifts may stand.
For now, what began as a private relationship between an elderly businessman and his caregiver has turned into a public family battle. The hospital scene has drawn widespread attention online, with many questioning where the line falls between genuine companionship and financial manipulation.
The outcome will ultimately be decided in court, where judges will weigh the evidence and determine whether the 102-year-old acted freely or under undue influence.
