Family celebrates caring Lanarkshire nurse as she marks 45 years of dedicated service

A Lanarkshire nurse is being celebrated for her 45 years of healthcare service.

Marion Craig has dedicated her whole career to helping others and her family say this is all down to being a truly "loving and caring" person.

The 62-year-old geriatric nurse from Blantyre has worked in the same role since 1977 but has loved every minute.

She was first based at the former Strathclyde Hospital in Motherwell before the building was knocked down.

Marion has since worked at the now Airbles Road Centre in the town, which was once used as a Motherwell maternity unit.

The mum-of-two has seen a lot of changes in local healthcare over the years but her focus has always remained the same - looking after those in need.

And celebrating her admirable career are daughters Justine Harkness and Fiona McHugh, and Marion's husband Robert Craig.

The family say they are incredibly proud of Marion who deserves all the recognition for her 45 years of dedicated service to the NHS.

Justine told us: "She loves her job. She says it can be hard going but she loves it. She feels it's a very rewarding job.

"My mum is very caring, loving and caring.

"We just want to thank my mum for the full time she's done with the NHS. For all her dedication and everything's she put into her job."

As expected, the last few years have been particularly challenging for anyone working in healthcare, and for Marion that was no different.

Nurses became stretched as pressure on hospitals increased through the strains of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But that only made Marion more determined to make sure people got the care they needed as she volunteered herself to work extra shifts and help out where she could.

Justine explained: "Through lockdown she was picking up more hours, doing extra shifts and helping out a lot more.

"It was quite demanding but she kept smiling through it.

"We thank her for her 45 years of dedication to the job.

"She's made us all very proud. Me, my sister and our stepdad couldn't be prouder of her."
