Families praise life in 'safest area' of Nottingham where emergency services are on their doorsteps

Families living in the 'safest area of Nottingham' have told of their life in the neighbourhood where firefighters, police and ambulances are on the doorstep. People of Manor Road in Carlton said they 'never feel in danger' as they have emergency services stations just across the road.

Dolores Hailes said she initially moved here because it was the "perfect" location for her family. "My husband was a journalist, and he is now a priest. We wanted to live close to a library and shops.

"It is the perfect location for us", the 73-year-old said. "I feel so safe because the fire station and police are just across the road. Ambulances are also nearby."

Carlton Fire Station is based on Manor Road and is staffed by wholetime firefighters spread across four watches, Red, White, Blue & Green. The police also moved from Cavendish Road and now operate from the same building.

The Carlton Ambulance Service is close by, elsewhere in Manor Road. Ms Hailes added: "You barely notice them, they are not loud at all.

"I guess you just get used to it. Sometimes you can see blue flashing lights going off in the middle of the night. The living room just goes blue sometimes."

She added: "We sometimes had the car broken into and the neighbour called the police. I never heard anything but the police came and knocked on our door within minutes. It is the safest area in Nottingham. I would never move out."

Julia Jones, another neighbour living on the same road, gave an example of just why living across the road from the fire station is so handy. The 53-year old-said: "I once dropped my keys through the drain.

"I just knocked on the door at the fire station. They got out a magnet, and recovered my keys from the drain. The firefighters are just amazing and they are always willing to help. It is not something that you would call the emergency services for but it is useful to be able to just knock on their door."

Ms Jones added: "I do feel protected. And they are not even loud, I have never heard their sirens going off in the middle of the night. The flashing lights are something that you get used to. You sometimes forget that they are there."

Ben Bird, who also lives in the area, said he would not ditch the location because it makes his family "feel safe". He added: "I know the emergency services are there and you would not notice it because they are not a nuisance."

The 29-year-old painter added: "You sometimes see them going out through the window. But it is something that you just get used to."

His partner Georgia Oates, a 25-year-old healthcare assistant, added: "Our daughter choked once and we just knocked on the ambulance service across the road. They helped her immediately. It is just helpful to have them nearby in an emergency."
