Families love 'safe' and 'peaceful' estate on outskirts of Newark but miss having a shop

Nottinghamshire families love living in a large housing estate on the outskirts of Newark. The housing development borders the village of Coddington, where hundreds of houses are located on the Newbury Road Estate, off Beacon Hill Road.

Families first began moving onto the estate in 1999, and over the last two decades hundreds of varied homes have been built in the area. The development has a strong sense of community, and many families have expressed how they enjoy the "quiet" and feel "safe" there.

Beauty therapist, Victoria Farmer, 45, has lived on the estate for 18 years. She lived in her first property on the estate for three years before moving into another one 15 years ago where she lives with her partner and children.

When asked what she liked about the area, Victoria said: "It's really quiet and safe here. Since we moved here we have had two children which go to Coddington School, we can walk there and it's a good school.

"We're lucky as we're not far and we can go into town, It's quiet and it's well maintained." Victoria also explained that the estate has lots of nice green spaces and areas for walking.

When asked if the estate has a good sense of community she said: "Yes, we all sort of look out for each other and we had a Platinum Jubilee street party." Engineer Simon Meakin, 54, has lived on the estate for nine years after moving into a bigger house.

He enjoys living in the "quiet" area with his family and also feels there is a good sense of community. When asked if there was anything the development needed he said: "I suppose at the end of the day the play area could be improved for the children but nowadays most of them just use their electronic devices."

Supermarket worker, Lucia Dove, 57, has also lived on the estate nine years. She said: "It's a fantastic area and we are very lucky to live in a peaceful location. It's close enough to the amenities and we have the school down the road and the town centre is walkable."

Another resident, Wendy Daniels, 43, moved to the estate 11 years ago. Wendy said she moved because it was closer to her daughter's school at the time. "Everyone is really friendly, we had a street party and things for the VE day and Jubilee and the Neighbourhood Watch is good," she said.

"We always say it would be nice to have a chip shop this side of town and it would be nice to have a village shop in Coddington. I like how there's never too many cars parked over the streets.

She added: "The people are friendly and I like being able to walk to the school. It feels safe, it's a friendly happy family place to live."

Project support officer, Alison Gould, 55, has lived on the estate for 9 years after moving to be nearer to family. She said: "I just think its a nice estate. It looks nice and it's friendly, and I feel quite safe."

When asked if the development needed anything else, Alison said: "I would say we could do with a village shop. We used to have a post office that was also a shop but the people who owned it converted it into their house.

"We have a couple of pubs in Coddington and the school but we could do with a shop."
